About Nordic Spas and Hydrotherapy

What is a Nordic Spa?

A Nordic Spa, also known as a Scandinavian or Nordic-inspired spa, is a wellness destination that draws inspiration from the traditional bathing practices of Nordic countries such as Sweden, Finland, Norway, and Iceland. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, Nordic spas offer a unique and holistic approach to relaxation, rejuvenation, and overall well-being.

At its core, a Nordic Spa experience typically revolves around the use of contrasting temperatures and hydrotherapy techniques to promote relaxation, detoxification, and revitalization of the body and mind. Guests typically move through a series of hot, cold, and restorative environments, such as saunas, steam rooms, cold plunge pools, and relaxation areas, in a ritual known as "thermotherapy."

The hallmark of a Nordic Spa experience is the cycle of heat followed by cold immersion, which is believed to stimulate circulation, boost the immune system, and promote detoxification. This alternating between hot and cold temperatures induces a state of deep relaxation and helps relieve muscle tension and stress.

In addition to hydrotherapy, Nordic Spas often incorporate other wellness practices such as aromatherapy, massage therapy, mindfulness exercises, and yoga to enhance the overall experience. Many Nordic spas also embrace the natural surroundings, with outdoor facilities offering breathtaking views of forests, mountains, or lakes, allowing guests to connect with nature while indulging in self-care.

The serene ambiance, minimalist design, and focus on natural elements are characteristic of Nordic spas, creating a tranquil sanctuary where guests can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with themselves. Whether seeking a moment of relaxation, a retreat for self-discovery, or a holistic approach to health and wellness, a visit to a Nordic Spa offers a rejuvenating experience that nourishes the body, soothes the soul, and invigorates the spirit.

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy embraces the Nordic tradition of holistic wellness, drawing inspiration from the therapeutic properties of water to promote relaxation, rejuvenation, and overall well-being. Rooted in centuries-old practices and guided by the principles of Nordic wellness, our hydrotherapy offerings provide a serene and transformative experience for body and soul.  Some common forms of hydrotherapy include:

Hot Water Therapy: This involves immersing the body in hot water, typically in the form of baths, hot tubs, or saunas. The heat helps to relax muscles, increase blood flow, and soothe aches and pains. It can also promote stress relief and mental relaxation.

Cold Water Therapy: Cold water immersion, such as cold baths, showers, or plunges, is used to stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation, and invigorate the body. Cold water therapy can also help improve athletic recovery, boost the immune system, and increase energy levels.

Contrast Hydrotherapy: Contrast therapy alternates between hot and cold water immersion, often in quick succession. This technique is believed to enhance circulation, promote detoxification, and stimulate the body's natural healing mechanisms. It can be particularly effective for relieving muscle soreness and improving recovery after exercise.

General Information

I'm New to Nordic Spas, What should I Expect?

We're always excited for someone to try a Nordic Spa for the first time! Our private, personal spa is a much different than a large public one, but the experience is just as relaxing.

First, we'll have you do a quick check-in at our reception cabin, which includes signing waivers, grabbing your robes and a chance to fill your water bottles. Next, it's a quick 2-5 minute walk through the forest to your private, secluded hydrotherapy cabin. We'll show you the ins and outs of the cabin, give you some tips, answer and questions and then leave you to it. We're always available at the reception cabin if you need anything!

After changing into your swimsuits in the relaxation room, you're ready to start your first hydrotherapy cycle. We recommend starting with the hot sauna for up to 15 minutes, then doing a 20 second or more cold plunge, and ending with a 15 minute rest period in one of the relaxation areas. The timing is just suggested of course; always pay attention to how you personally feel. Do this cycle as many times as you'd like, and feel free to adjust your timing to what works for you. However, we don't recommend more than 20 minutes in the sauna or more than 3 minutes in the cold plunge.

While in the relaxation stage, we recommend guests refrain from using their phones. You'll get the most of the experience if you spend the time meditating, talking with your partner or just taking in the nature and views.

Once you're satisfied with your time, or 2.5 hours are up, make your way back to the reception cabin to check-out.

What Should I Bring?

We recommend bringing a refillable water bottle, bathing suit and sandals/flip flops. You are free to bring your own robes and towels, although they are also provided with your reservation.

What services and treatments do you offer?

At Wilderness Retreat and Nordic Spa, we're thrilled to introduce our private Sauna & Cold Plunge cabins, available for reservation. Immerse yourself in tranquility and indulge in the ultimate retreat for body and soul.

What are the operating hours of the spa?

Our operating hours are currently 9am - 6pm, Monday-Friday, by reservation only.

Is there a dress code for the spa facilities?

At Wilderness Retreat and N0rdic Spa, we believe in creating a serene and welcoming environment where guests can fully relax and unwind. While we don't enforce a strict dress code, we recommend wearing comfortable and modest attire that allows you to fully enjoy your spa experience. Please be mindful of other guests and maintain modesty when moving between facilities.

Recommended Attire: While we provide towels and robes for your convenience, we ask that you bring swimwear or a bathing suit for added comfort and modesty. This ensures a pleasant and enjoyable experience for all guests.

For Sauna and Steam Room Sessions: In order to promote cleanliness and hygiene, all guests are required to sit on a towel while using the steam room. This helps prevent direct contact between your skin and the steam room benches, minimizing the spread of germs and bacteria.

I want to come but the weather is very hot. Should I wait?

The weather may be hot, but the cold plunge is always cold! The feedback we've received by guests on days as hot as 33°C is that they were still able to completely relax in between thermal cycles. Our cabins have plenty of shade and usually a bit of a breeze.

After you get out of the cold plunge, your body takes 10 minutes or more to get back up to standard temperature, and by then you're almost ready to hit the sauna again.

I want to come but the weather is very cold. Should I wait?

Our heated and insulated relaxation room is kept at 21°C. Pair that with heavy extra-large robes and a Finnish sauna, and you'll be toasty in even the coldest of Ontario's weather!
